Brits get drunk more than anywhere else in the world.

Polling of almost 130,000 people across 36 countries found that Brits get drunk more than anywhere else in the world. On average Brits binge drink around once a week.

The Global Drug survey is the largest such survey in the world. The survey found that Britons get drunk on average of 51.1 times in a 12-month period.

Countries that spoke English had the highest number of citizens getting drunk the USA, Canada, and Australia closely followed the UK.

There is an overall downward trend of drinking in the UK especially by young adults. But while there are fewer people drinking in the UK those who do drink are drinking a lot.

A consultant psychiatrist and addiction medicine specialist professor Adam Winstock said we are told its bad for us and it is. But the current guidelines fail to accept the pleasure of intoxication and give little guidance on the difference between being a little drunk and doing it 3-4 times a year versus weekly. We need to have that conversation. We do not tend to do moderation in the UK, we end up getting drunk as the point of the evening.

In England deaths from drink-related liver disease among 45-54-year old has continued to rise between 1933 and 2017. The belief by researchers is that we need to introduce guidelines on how to get drunk safely. Getting drunk carries the risk of injury and self-harm.

According to NHS guidelines, there is no safe level of drinking and men and women should not drink more than 14 units of alcohol a week on a regular basis which is about 6 pints of beer.

According to the Alcohol Information Partnership, this report runs contrary to the vast weight of data. The industry is committed to tackling harmful drinking.
